Structural inventory, composition and properties of fault zones and fracture networks in magmatic rocks in Germany (DaFNe)

Country / Region: Germany

Begin of project: May 1, 2018

End of project: December 31, 2024

Status of project: November 14, 2023

German Version

In addition to advising the Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH (BGE) in the selection process of a geological repository site, BGR performs its own research projects on the suitability of rock salt, claystone and crystalline rock for a geological repository in accordance with the Site Selection Act (StandAG).

Implementing the StandAG requires detailed knowledge of structural integrity and flow properties of fault zones and fracture networks in crystalline rocks. In the DaFNe project BGR analyses distribution, character and properties of crystalline rocks and fracture networks to allow for hydraulic and thermal simulations based on discrete fracture network models in numerical modelling software.

One report provides an overview of site selection process, data collection and modelling in crystalline host rocks for a final disposal.

A results report documents the development of a prototypical and cost-efficient workflow for the description of natural fracture networks, with which meaningful basic data can be collected for the modeling of fracture networks according to the discrete fracture network (DFN) approach.
