Research

Our comprehensive energy resources database contains data on fossil energy resources and renewable energies, in some cases dating back well into the last century. This data is constantly updated and forms the basis for advising the federal government, industry and the public, as well as for further studies.

Research activities also focus on sedimentary basins and the edges of the continents, where a wide range of raw materials can be found. With the societal goal of comprehensive decarbonisation of the energy supply by 2045, the focus is shifting from natural gas as a bridging raw material to energy sources such as hydrogen. Fundamental knowledge of large-scale and long-term geological processes for the development of continental margins serves as the basis for raw material geological assessments. Various geological and geophysical data sets are integrated into interpretation systems and can thus be analysed in terms of their spatial and temporal development.
