Applications
Application procedure. Applications for IODP expeditions are accepted by the ECORD Science Support and Advisory Committee (ESSAC) and then forwarded to the respective platform Science Operators, in case of MSP expeditions this is the ECORD Science Operator (ESO). Decisions on staffing of expeditions are made in collaboration with the respective expedition co-chiefs. ESSAC is in charge for the nomination of ECORD candidates.
Who can apply? Scientists, technical experts, students, etc. from German universities, research institutes and government agencies.
Application deadlines. Staff is usually selected six to twelve months prior to expeditions. ESSAC publishes calls for application for all expeditions. The IODP Coordination Office spreads the calls via info-mail. Current apply-to-sail calls can be found here.
Application documents. If you wish to apply, please send your application documents directly to the ESSAC Office with an additional copy to the German IODP Office. All further information and documents for your application can be obtained here.
Three-month positions to facilitate expedition participation
In the past young scientists sporadically had to withdraw their application or to resign from their invitation due to the lack of employment and thus a proper insurance for the time of the expedition. Since 2009, funds have been available in the coordination budget, which allow us to grant up to two three-month positions per year in order to allow the applicant to participate in the expedition. The review process is organized by the IODP Coordination at BGR. Applications will be reviewed by three independent scientists.

These three-month positions are exclusively for researchers, which (1) are officially invited to participate in an IODP expedition and (2) are unemployed for the period of this expedition. If you are interested in such an employment, please contact us.
Your application in English language should include a letter of motivation, your CV and a copy of the invitation to the expedition.
