A catalogue of earthquakes within the EU (as of 1990), Austria and Switzerland was com-piled in about 1985 by J.M. van Gils, as part of the work of the EU working group on "Safety of Thermal Reactors: Seismic Effects". This was done on the basis of the existing national and regional catalogues. The format was standardized, obvious errors were corrected and duplicate citations of the same earthquakes in various catalogues were eliminated. After van Gils' death, his work was continued by BGR.

The catalogue reflects the very different standards of the various national catalogues at that time (about 1985). In the meantime these national catalogues have been developed further. In spite of these deficiencies, this catalogue gives a good general impression of the seismic activity and seismic risk in the area for which the data was collected.

The Earthquake Catalogue with explanations is available as a Download (zip, 333 KB). If you download the catalogue, please send us your name and address by email, it's interesting for us to know who works with the catalogue.
