Earthquake Catalogue of Ghana

In close cooperation between the BGR and the Geological Survey Department of Ghana in Accra the earthquake catalogue for Ghana was compiled. For this purpose, the remained chronicles, reports and the publications about historical events as well as the seismic registrations and the data to new events were revised thoroughly. The parameters of historical earthquakes in parts were estimated newly and recharged. The epicenters of registered earthquakes in parts were computed newly. The data are presented in a uniform format. The catalogue covers the period from 1615 till 2003.

The earthquake data catalogue, the format description and the list of references with explanations – all three data files in ASCII-format - are available as one ZIP-file for downloading: Ghana-Earthquake-CAT-2013-02-01.zip (zip, 11 KB) If you download the catalogue, please send us your name and address by email, it's interesting for us to know who works with the catalogue.

The map (fig. 5 in AMPONSAH et al. 2012) shows the earthquake epicenters of Ghana for the years 1615 till 2003. It should be considered that the acquisition of the earthquakes was restrained widely on the territory of Ghana. The size of the earthquake symbols is according to the epicentral intensity I0. Nonfelt earthquakes, but also stronger events with higher magnitudes which may be felt, however without any macroseismic information, are displayed with non red circles.
