Groundwater Monitoring

To optimally use and protect the aquifers, water resource management must know how much groundwater is available, recharged and extracted each year. In order to effectively prevent groundwater contamination, the geology, as well as direction and velocity of the groundwater flow have to be known.

Good groundwater monitoring records; processes and continuously analyzes the most important data describing the nature and changes of the groundwater system. The prerequisite for this is a functioning network of groundwater monitoring stations, but also an information system for storing and processing the data and finally hydrogeological expertise to interpret the results. Digital innovations in remote sensing, telecommunication and of measuring technology simplify and automate data collection and processing.

The sector project evaluates these innovations regarding their application in development cooperation and develops concepts to integrate them into groundwater management.
