Mozambique’s mining sector occupies an important position in the country’s economy, through the production and export of coal, gas, products from heavy mineral sands, gold, tantalum, graphite and precious stones. The core problem is the government's inadequate capacity to plan and control the mining sector. Mining activities are insufficiently monitored in terms of quantities and qualities. As a result, there are difficulties in determining production volumes and taxes, which result in revenue losses for the state. The BGR project aims at further strengthening the technical and organizational capacities of the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) and the associated institutions to improve the implementation of state instruments and competences.

Priorities for technical support are:

  • Effective monitoring of existing mining projects to check reported mining quantities and qualities
  • Promotion of systems for calculating and fixing national commodity prices
  • Capacity building on geoscientific topics
  • Potential analyses for commodities
  • Analysis of the commodity market
