Indonesia - Good local Governance – Mitigation of Georisks
Country / Region: Indonesia / Asia
Focal point: Georisks
Begin of project: May 18, 2006
End of project: June 30, 2017
Status of project: October 4, 2017
Up to 500 natural disasters affect the livelyhood of many thousand Indonesiens every year. Earthquakes, vulcanic eruptions, tsunamis, flooding and particularly land slides in densely populated and urban areas are posing a considerable threat to the population. In the time span from 2003 to 2014 around 200.000 people fell victim to natural disaster and another 1.4 million Indonesiens had to be relocated. Expenses for reconstructing due to the damage of infrastructure caused direct losses to the Indonesian national economy of more than 16 billion US$. In response to such facts a project on „Mitigation of Georisks“ was inititated in 2003 with the Geological Agency of Indonesia as project partner. The project is part of the german technical cooperation under the auspices of the german Federal Ministry for economic Cooperation and Devlopment (BMZ) in the good governance/decentralization sector.
The project supports the local government’s services in assessing and evalutating local geological hazards. It is aimed at making distaster mitigation and management a political and social imperative. The technical findings are converted into recommendations for national to local administrative entities(from province to villages) to plan for disaster reducing activities in order to better safeguard the living environment of the local population.
Project activities regionally focus on the provinces of Central-Java, Yogyakarta, East- and West Nusa Tenggara as well as on the Governorate of Aceh.
Within the project a multi hazards assessment was developed. The new approach enables to assess the geohazards with respect to their different and complex dependencies. It focuses on a „Geological Hazards Summary Map“ that serves as a basis for local and regional planning decisions. Additional campaigns were targeted on increasing awareness of the population towards geohazards and disaster prevention and preparedness.
