Mongolia is a resource rich country and its mineral resources and deposits are an important basis for the economic and social development of the country. The project aims at generating reliable data and information on the mineral resource potential and its sustainable development.
The project was part of the focal area on “Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources”, which was agreed upon in 2011 by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Mongolian government, and was designed as complementary BGR contribution to the parallel project “Integrated mineral Resources Initiative” (IMRI) implemented by the GIZ. The project supported the state mining authority of Mongolia (Mineral Resources Authority of Mongolia, MRAM), in order to increase their capacity as professional service provider for the Mongolian mineral resources sector and thereby complying with their mandate to regulate and promote the sector.
Strengthening the expertise of MRAM happened in the classical three fields of activity of a mining authority that includes a Geological Survey: Evaluation of mineral deposits and occurrences, elaboration of regional or global oriented economic analyses and studies on Mongolian mining products, and the enhancement of the in-house data management by supporting the further development and extension of an integrated data management system (IMS), which will help to organize the mineral resource and mining related data as well as the management of exploration and mining licenses in a more transparent manner, less susceptible to any manipulation.
Tools and methods to reach the project goal were mainly the provision of advisory services and capacity development to MRAM in the operative and personal area, especially as on-the-job Training and additional external and internal trainings and courses.
Project duration was about 3 years (2014–2017) and financial budget amounted to 1.6 Mio. Euro.
